Created by Water Safety New Zealand, Under5.org.nz gives you the tools to keep your child safe whether it be in, on or around water both in the home, in the community or out in the environment.

Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of death in under fives. It takes only centimetres of water and less than two minutes for your child to drown. Never turn away or leave your child unattended while they are in or near water.

Here’s an overview of Water Safety New Zealand's 8 ways that will help you come your child’s water safety hero!

  1. Within Arms Reach

Whether it be the home or out of the gate, always be 'on the ball' when it comes to supervising children around water. Be in the present and be prepared.

  1. Who’s in Charge?

A responsible adult must always be on 'duty' when children are around water.

  1. Where’s the Danger?

Children get up to all kinds of mischief. When it comes to water don't gamble with their lives. Always look out for water hazards and drain the water to prevent drownings.

  1. Bathtime fun

Bathtime means water confidence time with an adult. Don't let distractions take you away from being within arms' reach of your little ones.

  1. Keep Focused

Give your little ones your time. Ditch the phone and other distractions. They're worth it.

  1. Rules and Regulations

  1. Teach Them Well

Parents, you are your child's first teacher and role model when it comes to water safety. Teach your child water safety for safe play and fun at the pool, beach, river and lake.

  1. Have Fun
