There’s something magical about bedtime stories. That quiet moment at the end of a long day, when you get to snuggle up with your child and forget about the laundry in the lounge waiting to be folded and the dishes in the sink. Bedtime stories gift us the certainty of an unhurried moment each day with our little ones. As a busy working parent, I’ve come to treasure this time. The wind down and the connection is often just as beneficial for me most days as it is for my son. Reading together at bedtime is such a beautiful way to slow the pace, share a giggle and just be present. It doesn’t take long before this simple ritual becomes something both you and your child can both look forward to.
Choosing the right story matters. With so many children’s books out there, I’ve definitely found myself halfway through one thinking, “I just can’t read this again.” And let’s be honest our kids feel the same way too. That’s why it’s worth choosing books with strong storylines and fun characters we can bring to life with silly voices. As a teacher, I have found that you can often see the ripple effects of children who are read to regularly at home. Children who are read to regularly tend to develop a richer vocabulary, stronger listening skills and a deeper love for stories. They develop an understanding about how stories can make us feel and it fosters their love for literacy. They grow to understand that books are a place where they can find enjoyment, calm and escape.
Bedtime stories for our littlest ones are all about hearing your voice. They soak up the rhythm of your words and the rise and fall of your tone while also being exposed to lots of new vocabulary. They become curious about the different people, places and creatures they meet in stories. Many of which they may have yet to encounter in real life. It’s a gentle way to expand their world and their imaginations.
As our children grow older so does their ability to engage with us during these times. They might start asking questions, predicting what might happen next and join in with you to read their favourite lines. For older kids, bedtime stories can spark deeper conversations. As you tuck them in or snuggle beside them while they drift off, you might find yourself chatting about the story, “What would you do if you were king of the wild things?” or “What do you think was going through the witch’s mind when her broom snapped?”.Bedtime stories offer us a chance to talk about characters choices and feelings and take a moment to reflect on what we might do in their shoes. I often find simply choosing the right book can open the door to having conversations and tapping into things that might be on top for our children.
I know that the day will come that my son will stop asking me for just one more story. His favourite books will be chosen a little less often and the snuggles might grow shorter. But right now, he wants me there, my voice, my warmth and most of all my time. So, if you’re still wondering whether bedtime stories are worth the effort, the answer is always yes. The dishes can wait. The laundry will still be there tomorrow, so grab that book, snuggle close and hold onto the magic for just a little while longer.
